The following is an attempt to place on record the tragedies that lay
behind the names on both St. James' Church Memorial and Foots
                   Cray Memorial.

In researching their individual stories, it has become clear just how
deeply their sense of duty and love of their country was felt by each
                   and everyone of the men.

I hope that you will find the many varied stories as moving and
intriguing as I have, and that next time you stop to look at the
Memorials, each man's name will mean something to you, as they
undoubtedly did to the bereaved families who wanted to ensure that
their loved ones' sacrifice would not forgotten.

The list is not complete because some of the men lost, especially from
Foots Cray, have been remembered on the Sidcup Memorial on
                   Sidcup Green.

One hundred years later, their varied and intriguing stories are still
worth telling. We can all be thankful and appreciate what an
unselfish sacrifice each and everyone of them made for us.

                                         Side-by-side they lived
                                         The wealthy and the poor

                                         Side-by-side they went

                                         To defend the Empire

                                         Side-by-side they died

                                         In a brutal, senseless war
