To NCRA Members :
The road bridge at the Old Mill site in Bexley High Street is old and weak and needs to be replaced. This
week, Bexley Council have announced that work to remove the existing bridge and rebuild a new stronger
and slightly wider one will begin on 7 January and is expected to last until July 2016. It will be funded by
Transport for London. We are informed that if the work is not carried out as planned the bridge could fail
Installation of a temporary foot bridge over Mill Pond, will start in November 2015 and we are assured that
there will be no traffic disruption prior to and during the Christmas period.
From 7 January and throughout February there will be traffic lights on the existing bridge whilst utility
companies divert pipes and equipment on to the temporary foot bridge.
For five weeks from the end of February the road will be closed whilst the old bridge is dismantled and the
first stage of the new bridge is built. Traffic will be diverted in both directions via the A2 whist this is done.
Northbound traffic will be diverted via Vicarage Road, Dartford Road, Old Bexley Lane, the A2 and Bourne
Road. Southbound traffic will be diverted via Bourne Road, the A2, Old Bexley Lane, Dartford Road and
Vicarage Road.
Once the first stage of the bridge is complete, probably during April, the road will re-open in one direction to
allow southbound traffic to travel towards North Cray. Northbound traffic will remain diverted via Vicarage
Road, Dartford Road, Old Bexley Lane, the A2 and Bourne Road, until the work is fully completed.
We have also been assured that due to the conservation status of Bexley Village, the current 7.5 tonne
weight restriction will continue once the new bridge is in operation. Large vehicles (with the exception of
buses and coaches) will continue to be restricted from using the bridge..
Bexley council will send residents a letter with more detailed information in November. There are ongoing
discussions with London Buses regarding changes to bus routes during the road closures.
