To NCRA Members.
This year there have been a number of incidents where thoughtless, careless or downright criminal behaviour has affected and endangered
wildlife in Footscray Meadows.
Three incidents alone were witnessed by one NCRA member.
The first was a case of dog owners failing to control their dogs and thereby enabling them to chase and attack a swan. Following this incident,
laminated posters were put up with cable ties around the area of Five Arches Bridge asking that dogs be put on leads in the area of the bridge
and river wildlife. However these have now been torn down. We have asked that properly installed and obvious notices be erected either side
of the bridge.
The second incident was when an adult man was actually riding a jet-ski up and down in front of our member in the wide part of the river by
the bridge. He eventually removed the jet-ski from the river and put it onto a trailer behind a sort of a motor bike which sped across the
meadows in the direction of Albany Park.
The latest incident witnessed by our member this week was four boys/lads throwing stones/rocks into the river roughly 100yds along from the
bridge where the islands start. They were trying to hit one of the birds. Another witness took her phone/camera out as if to take a picture and
they immediately ran off in the direction of Foots Cray but, at the last moment, they let out a shout of success as they had actually hit one of
the moorhens. It was badly injured and obviously in great distress. The poor bird was flopping about helplessly in the water but gradually
made its way to the island and under the overhanging foliage and was lost to sight.
Our member said "It would be difficult to describe the disgust felt and the horror at seeing this little bird attacked and probably to eventually
die through the mindless violence and cruelty of these psychopathic yobs."
All three incidents have been reported to the police.
